Eligible students are being encouraged to apply for the 2027 New South Wales Indigenous Health Internship Program. This is a program implemented by the New South Wales Government to increase career development opportunities and create more Indigenous human resources in the public health system.
The 2026 program achieved its best results to date with 25 internships for students in a variety of 23 health-related fields, including occupational therapy, physical therapy, speech pathology and pharmacy.
A notable point is that selected students will be paid during their internship at medical facilities in the New South Wales Health system, while continuing their studies at school. This helps students gain more practical experience instead of just learning theory in a university environment.
Which industries can participate?
The program is for students studying many fields within the health-related field. Some typical fields include occupational therapy, physical therapy, speech pathology and pharmacy.

In 2026, the program also has a pharmacy student and two neuropsychology students participating for the first time. In particular, the number of interns in rural areas also exceeded the number in urban areas for the first time.
This shows that the program not only focuses on hospitals and medical facilities in big cities but also aims to develop medical human resources in local areas.
Study while gaining practical experience
One of the greatest values of the program is that students can have direct exposure to the working environment in the health system while still completing their studies.
An occupational therapy student who participated in the program shared that the internship experience helped her develop practical skills and techniques that studying at a university could not fully provide.
This is also an important advantage for students after graduation, because practical work experience can help them better understand the career environment and better prepare for the job search process.
The New South Wales Government wants to develop Indigenous health human resources
The program was developed with two main objectives: to increase the number of Indigenous health professionals working in the New South Wales Health system and to expand career development opportunities for Indigenous communities.
According to the New South Wales Government, such programs give students access to real-life healthcare environments and in many cases can be the start of a long-term career in public health.
Registration deadline for the 2027 program
For the 2027 program, registration will close on September 30, 2026. Eligible students should carefully check program requirements and prepare their application ahead of time.
This is a notable example of how students in Australia can seek out programs that combine study, practical experience and career opportunities throughout their studies.
Note: The program has separate participation conditions and is for eligible subjects according to New South Wales Government regulations. Interested persons should check the official requirements before applying.
