From October 2, 2026, Australia applies new regulations on school transfer for study abroad international students. During the transition period until June 30, 2027, most international students must complete at least 12 months of their main course before transferring to another institution. From July 1, 2027, international students transferring schools will have to apply for Student new visa according to transfer stream and visa issued before starting to study at the new school.

<picture></picture>

These changes make choosing a school and course from the start even more important for international students planning to study abroad in Australia.

Transferring schools to study in Australia, what will change from October 2, 2026?

According to the National Code of Practice for Providers of Education and Training to Overseas Students, the transfer restriction period has been adjusted. For non-high school students:

From October 2, 2026 to June 30, 2027: must complete at least 12 months of principal course before switching to another provider.

From July 1, 2027: the 12-month transition regulation ends and the Student visa transfer stream mechanism begins to apply.

For high school students, the 6-month mark of the first high school course before transferring schools still applies.

1. From October 2, 2026 to June 30, 2027: Must study 12 months before transferring

During the transition period, training institutions are not allowed to accept international students transferring from another provider if the student has not completed at least 12 months of principal course. This regulation applies to providers outside the general sector.

Example

You start: Bachelor of Business – School A

If you start the principal course in October 2026, during the transition period, the transfer to School B will generally have to wait until you have completed the required time.

However, this does not mean that in all cases you must wait the full 12 months.

2. Some cases can still be transferred early

National Code still stipulates some exceptions. Students can be transferred ahead of time if, for example:

Provider or the current course is no longer registered.

Provider has taken measures that prevent students from continuing the course.

The current provider agrees to allow the student to transfer and follow the correct release process.

The student’s government or sponsoring agency confirms that the transfer is in the best interests of the student.

Therefore, “12 months” should not be understood as an absolute ban on all cases of transferring schools before the deadline.

3. From July 1, 2027: Transferring schools will require a new Student visa

This is a more notable change. According to the announcement of the Australian Government, from July 1, 2027, international students who want to transfer to another education provider after arriving in Australia will have to apply under Student visa transfer stream.

The important point is: Students must be issued a new Student visa before starting studies at the new provider. This means that transferring schools will no longer be as simple as: School A → apply for CoE School B → start studying → process visa later. Instead, the new visa must be issued before the student begins their course at the new institution.

4. New visa does not mean extended stay in Australia

One point many international students need to note is that being granted a new visa through transfer stream does not mean the stay period is recalculated from the beginning. According to information announced by the Government, the expiration date of the new visa will remain the same as the expiration date of the current visa. Therefore, transferring schools does not mean that students can “reset” their visa time.

5. Do not transfer to a course with a lower AQF

The new Student visa transfer stream mechanism also aims to limit students from transferring to lower level courses after entering Australia. According to the Australian Government, transfer stream will only allow transfer: Same AQF level or higher.

For example:

Bachelor → Bachelor: same level.

Bachelor → Master: higher level.

Higher Education → VET: not transferred under the new mechanism.

The government also said students will not be able to use this mechanism to move onto more packaged courses.

6. Why did Australia change its school transfer regulations?

According to the Australian Government, the reforms are intended to increase the integrity of the Student visa system and limit the use of student visas by students that are not suitable for their original purpose. One issue highlighted by the Government is the situation of students starting with a Higher Education program and then transferring to VET once they arrive in Australia. The new regulations aim to limit downgrading to courses with lower AQFs and admission models that rely on attracting students to lower-cost programs once they have entered the country.

7. Timeline for transfer regulations to study abroad in Australia

Time

Regulations

Before October 2, 2026

Applying pre-reform transfer regulations

02/10/2026 – 30/06/2027

Most non-high school students must complete 12 months principal course before switching providers

01/07/2027

Start of Student visa transfer stream

From July 1, 2027

Must be granted a new visa before starting studies at the new provider

From July 1, 2027

Only transfer to or up AQF level; do not transfer from Higher Education to VET via transfer stream

What do international students need to prepare?

With these changes, choosing a course before coming to Australia is increasingly important. If you are preparing a Student visa application, you should consider:

1. Choose a major that matches your background

Don’t just choose a major because of low tuition or easy admission.

2. Clearly determine the AQF of the course

This is especially important if you plan to change majors or programs after coming to Australia.

3. Find out the provider’s transfer policy

The school’s transfer conditions and visa conditions are two different issues.

4. Do not arbitrarily drop out of school or transfer to a new school

Having a new CoE does not mean you have met all visa requirements. Especially from July 1, 2027, transfer stream students must be issued a new visa before starting to study at a new provider.

What if I’m in Australia and want to change schools?

This is the case that needs the most careful examination. You shouldn’t just ask: “Will the new school accept me?” You need to see at the same time Current Course → Principal course → time studied → Current Provider → Release → new CoE → AQF → Student visa status → regulations applicable at the time of transfer. In particular, the regulations applied in the period October 2, 2026–June 30, 2027 are different from the mechanism starting from July 1, 2027. Regulations for transferring schools to study in Australia are changing significantly from October 2026.

During the transition period until June 30, 2027, most non-high school students must complete 12 months of principal course before transferring to another provider. From July 1, 2027, the Student visa transfer stream mechanism will be applied. Students switching providers must be issued a new visa before starting studies at the new school, the new visa retains the expiration date and transfers can only be made horizontally or higher towards AQF.

Therefore, if you are preparing to study in Australia or are already in Australia and planning to change schools/majors, please check the regulations that apply to your own application before making a decision.

According to the assessment method of the Australian Department of Home Affairs, Evidence Level is not a ranking of a school’s educational quality. This index involves data on Visa records, compliance status and some Visa behaviors of international student groups. Therefore, when choosing a school, students should not just look at the Evidence Level and immediately conclude about the quality of training.

What is Evidence Level?

To put it simply, Evidence Level is an index used in the Student Visa application risk assessment system. This index reflects a number of characteristics related to Visa history and compliance with immigration regulations of international student groups at the school or by country group. In other words: Evidence Level does not answer the question “Is this school good at teaching?” Instead, it is more about the question: “What are the Visa risk characteristics of the international student profile associated with this school/country?” These are two completely different issues.

How is Evidence Level calculated?

According to published calculation methods, the Evidence Level index is constructed based on data of international students, including applicants and Student Visa holders associated with educational institutions.

Groups of indicators included in the evaluation include:

Index

Weight

Visa cancellation rate

25%

Visa refusal rate due to fraud

40%

Visa refusal rate not due to fraud

10%

Rate of students overstaying their Visa (unlawful non-citizen)

15%

Rate of subsequent Visa Protection submissions

10%

Among them, the Visa refusal rate due to fraud has the largest weight, up to 40%. This shows that the honesty and consistency of Visa documents are particularly important factors in the evaluation system.

What do Evidence Levels mean? Level 3 is an increase in the level of risk reflected in the relevant visa data, not a gradual decrease in the quality of education.

Therefore, it should not be understood:

Level 1 = good school

Level 2 = average school

Level 3 = poor school
This understanding equates two completely different evaluation systems. Does Evidence Level evaluate the quality of training?

No. Evidence Level is not a ranking based on:

Quality of faculty

Curriculum

Facilities

Quality of classrooms

Quality of research

Academic Reputation

Quality of Degrees

Employability After Graduation

Quality of Learning Facilities

Research Quality

Academic Reputation

Quality of Degrees

Employability After Graduation

A school with Evidence Level 3 does not mean that the school has poor training. Similarly, a school with a low Evidence Level does not mean that every student will definitely be granted a Visa. This is why when advising on studying abroad, it is necessary to separate two issues: the school’s educational quality and the visa risk of the application.

Why can a school have a high Evidence Level?

One of the important reasons lies in the Visa behavior of international students. For example, data may reflect cases such as:

Visa canceled due to violation of Visa conditions.

Visa application was rejected because of fraud related issues.

Visa application was rejected for other reasons.

Students stay in Australia when their Visa has expired.

Student then applies for Protection Visa.

This also explains why Evidence Level cannot be used alone to conclude whether a school is “good” or “bad”.

What can be the impact of breaching Student Visa conditions?

Certain violations of Visa conditions may be reflected in the data used for assessment. For example, issues related to:

Condition 8202

This condition involves students maintaining their studies and meeting prescribed course, academic progress and enrollment requirements. If students do not comply with Student Visa requirements, this may result in consequences regarding their Visa status.

Condition 8105

This condition relates to the Student Visa holder’s employment restrictions. Working beyond the allowable limit may result in a violation of Visa conditions and affect your immigration status.

Therefore, students should not only care about “being granted a Visa or not”, but also must understand and fully comply with the conditions after the Visa is granted.

What about voluntary visa cancellation?

Not all cases of Visa cancellation have the same meaning. In the Evidence Level calculation method, the case of a student requesting to cancel their Visa is not handled the same as the case of a Visa being canceled due to a violation. This is an important detail because if only looking at the phrase “Visa cancellation”, readers can easily misunderstand the nature of the data.

How many days should I worry about overdue visa?

This is also an issue that needs to be understood correctly. Should not be simplified into: “Just overdue your Visa will cause the school to increase its Level.” Unfair status cases have specific criteria and handling methods. In particular, short overstay situations that are handled early should not be equated with prolonged illegal stays without contacting the Department of Home Affairs.

Therefore, if one is having problems with Visa status, the most important thing is to handle the residence status as soon as possible and seek appropriate advice, instead of assuming that the application will definitely be affected.

So is Evidence Level 3 a “ghost school”?

No. This is one of the misconceptions that needs to be eliminated. Evidence Level 3 is not a label:

“Poor school”
“Ghost school”
“Not worth studying at”

It reflects a group of indicators related to Visa applications and compliance behavior of international students. A school may have good training quality but still have a high Evidence Level due to the Visa data characteristics of the relevant international student group. Conversely, a low Evidence Level cannot be understood as a school that is definitely suitable for all students. Does

Evidence Level affect Student Visa applications?

This is the point students need to pay attention to. Evidence Level is related to the level of evidence that a Student Visa applicant may need to provide in the process of proving his/her application. However, the Evidence Level of the school is not the only factor that determines whether a Visa is granted or denied. The application still needs to be considered as a whole, including factors related to the applicant, study purpose, study history, finances, personal circumstances and current Visa requirements.

Therefore, you should not advise like: “Level 1 schools are definitely easy to pass a Visa.” Or: “Level 3 schools are definitely difficult to get a Visa.” Both ways of saying it oversimplify the problem.

What should students do when choosing a school?

Instead of just asking: “What level is this school?” You should ask at least 4 questions:

1. Is the school suitable for your learning goals?

Take a look at the curriculum, subject content, learning path and compatibility with the current platform.

2. What is the quality and value of the degree?

Evidence Level is not a substitute for assessing educational quality.

You still need to consider the school’s reputation, training program, output results and degree value for career goals.

3. Is there anything in your Visa application that needs explaining?

This is a very important part.

A school with a low Evidence Level cannot “erase” weaknesses in individual records.

On the contrary, an application that is properly prepared, honest and has clear learning goals still needs to be evaluated based on the actual circumstances of the applicant.

4. Does it meet the Department of Home Affairs’ proof requirements?

If the application requires additional evidence, prepare complete, consistent and explainable documents.

Evidence Level is only part of the decision to choose a school

This is a reasonable approach. Don’t choose a school just because of Level 1. But don’t eliminate a school just because of Level 3. Evaluate at the same time: Quality of training + field of study + cost + location + career opportunities + learning path + Visa requirements + Evidence Level.

By putting all the factors into the same picture, students and families can make better decisions. Evidence Level is not a ranking of school quality. Level 1, Level 2 or Level 3 mainly reflect data related to Visa, compliance status and immigration behavior of the international student group, but do not directly evaluate the quality of teaching or school facilities. In particular, because the Visa refusal rate due to fraud is heavily weighted, the integrity and consistency of the application are factors that both students and consulting units need to pay special attention to. So, if you are choosing a school to study abroad in Australia, don’t just ask: “What level is this school?” Ask further: “Is this school a good fit for my academic goals and profile?” That is the correct and more complete view of Evidence Level.

Genuine Student (GS) is creating a new challenge for universities and educational institutions in Australia: How to support students in clearly explaining why they want to study in Australia, but still ensure the answers really come from the students themselves?

<picture></picture>

In the context of Genuine Student requirements, they play an increasingly important role in the process study abroad In Australia, preparing a presentation that is honest, consistent and accurately reflects personal circumstances is becoming an important step before submitting your application.

Some educational units are testing new approaches, including using AI to guide students in preparing content, instead of letting AI write complete answers for them.

Genuine Student is changing the way students prepare their Visa applications

According to the model introduced by Successful Graduate, students can use the Genuine Student Statement Builder tool after completing a pre-departure preparation course or a school-licensed academic readiness support course. It is worth noting that this tool is not designed to create a complete GS lesson with just a few commands. Instead, students are instructed to think about factors related to their personal circumstances and goals, then construct their own answers.

This approach reflects a growing problem in international education: AI can help students write better, but students’ personal stories should not be turned into a machine-generated product.

Two problems solved at the same time

Genuine Student preparation is not only about Visa. Universities also have to solve another problem: how to maintain interaction with students during the period from receiving the admission letter to officially enrolling in Australia? This period can last many months and has many potential risks.

Students can:

Worry about the ability to get a Visa

Change their choice of major.

Having difficulty with finance.

Consider another study abroad country.

Having problems with accommodation.

Or simply change your decision to study abroad.

Therefore, staying connected with students after they have accepted an offer is becoming an increasingly important part of an international recruitment strategy. Successful Graduate cites the case of a collaboration with London South Bank University, in which a group of students participating in micro-credential programs had a conversion rate of 15.8% to enrolled students, compared to 8.5% for the group who did not participate.

According to published data, this equates to an 85.9% improvement in enrollment conversion efficiency, across a group of approximately 5,800 prospective students. This shows that preparation activities before students arrive in Australia are not only meaningful in terms of student support but can also become part of the international admission funnel.

From a questionnaire to a conversation about yourself

One of the notable things about the Genuine Student Statement Builder model is the way it approaches the GS preparation process. According to Successful Graduate, the tool guides students through the five Genuine Student criteria outlined by the Department of Home Affairs, while also assisting in controlling word count and asking guiding questions.

However, students still have to write their own answers. The AI mentor named Professor Sage is designed not to write, translate, or paraphrase student answers. Instead, AI works by asking questions. For example, if a student asks the system to help write an answer, the system will not directly create content but may ask questions related to:

Personal circumstances.

Family and relationships back home.

Financial capacity.

Reason for choosing the course.

Reasons for choosing Australia.

Future career plans.

Students then use their own information to write their answers. AI can assist with feedback on clarity, relevance, and alignment with GS criteria, but the final story still belongs to the applicant.

Why is it increasingly important to “tell your own story”?

This is perhaps the most notable issue in the trend of using AI to prepare study abroad applications. Today, AI can create very smooth, logical and professional paragraphs in just a few seconds. But a perfect essay isn’t necessarily a good essay if it doesn’t reflect the person applying. Genuine Student was built to help review agencies better understand each student’s circumstances, learning goals and future plans.

So, a simple but honest answer can be more valuable than a very polished but stereotypical article or that does not reflect the individual’s situation. This is also the boundary that schools and educational consulting units must pay special attention to when using AI. AI should help students think and express themselves better, not become a storyteller for students.

Turning Visa pressure into an opportunity to increase interaction with students

This model also shows a new approach to international enrollment. Instead of viewing the Visa preparation process as a separate procedure, schools can integrate it into the entire preparation journey before students arrive in Australia.

For example:

Receive offer → Complete the preparation program → Genuine Student preparation → Academic and life preparation → Apply for Visa → Go to Australia to study

This approach creates more opportunities for the school to maintain contact with students during a period that is inherently very risky. For students, this process can also help them better understand:

their chosen field of study.

Reasons for wanting to study in Australia.

Career goals.

Financial capacity.

Plan after completing the course.

Personal factors related to the decision to study abroad.

In other words, preparing for a professor should not only be seen as “writing an essay to submit a Visa”, but can become an opportunity for students to re-examine their own decision to study abroad.

Privacy and compliance remain a concern

The use of AI in the Genuine Student preparation process also raises important questions for universities. Some systems allow the school’s admissions or compliance department to track student drafts based on GS criteria. This can help schools detect problems that need early support.

However, it also raises questions about:

Student privacy.

Where is the data stored.

Who has access to drafts?

How much can schools intervene?

Where is the line between guidance and intervention?

How to distinguish between a student receiving legitimate aid and someone else writing their application on their behalf?

These will be increasingly important issues as AI is used more in the admission process and preparation of study abroad applications.

Genuine Student and the future of Australian international admissions

Genuine Student Statement Builder is not only notable because it is a new AI tool. What’s more telling is that it reflects a broader trend in international education: technology is being used to structure students’ preparation, rather than simply doing their work for them.

For universities, this can be a way to both support students in better preparation for the Visa process and maintain interaction from the time of receiving an offer until admission. For international students, the more important message is quite simple:

Don’t try to write a “perfect” story. Understand your own story and present it honestly, consistently, and authoritatively.

In the context of Genuine Student requirements being increasingly emphasized, the ability to explain why you chose your field of study, why you chose Australia and your study and career plans can become an important part of the Visa application preparation process.

Finally, technology can assist students in asking the right questions and reviewing their plans. But Genuine Student’s story must still be the story of the students themselves.

Although the application deadline is long, the number of scholarships granted will be limited. Therefore, students should prepare their applications early instead of waiting until close to the deadline.

What do I need to prepare when registering?

To increase initiative when preparing documents, students should prepare documents related to:

Document preparation should be done at the same time as the admission application process to avoid missing the deadline.

Why is the 50% tuition scholarship noteworthy?

Tuition costs are one of the biggest expenses when studying in Australia. With 50% tuition fees support, the scholarship can help students significantly reduce the tuition fees they have to pay during their studies. Besides financial benefits, scholarships are also an opportunity for students to demonstrate their academic achievements, leadership capacity and personal development orientation in their study abroad applications.

CQUniversity ASEAN Student Scholarship is currently announced as Open Now, with 50% tuition support for eligible international students from the ASEAN region. If you are planning to study an Undergraduate, Postgraduate Coursework or Research program at CQUniversity Australia, this is a scholarship program worth checking the eligibility for and preparing your application early.

Note: Scholarships are limited in number and are considered based on CQUniversity’s criteria. Students should fully check the eligibility requirements, applicable majors, and application requirements before submitting.

However, if we look more broadly, a family member studying and living in Australia can also create many new connection opportunities, experiences and choices for relatives in Vietnam.

In particular, for families with spouse studying abroad, the other spouse can in some cases apply for a Visa to accompany or go to Australia later as a member family. Here’s what families should know.

1. Parents have more opportunities to go to Australia to visit their children

When children study in Australia, parents can have more opportunities to go to Australia to visit their children, travel and experience their children’s lives. This is not only an opportunity for families to reunite but also helps parents directly see:

Where are you living?

What is the learning environment like?

How independent are you?

Is the city I live in suitable?

How is real life in Australia different from what the family imagined?

For many parents, experiencing their children’s lives firsthand can help them feel more secure while their children study away from home.

Note: Going to Australia to visit your child must still meet the conditions of the appropriate Visa type. A child’s study abroad does not automatically create residency rights for the parents. Australia’s is particularly interested. With Student Visa (subclass 500), learners can include partner in their application as a family member if they meet the conditions. Family members can also apply for a Visa to come to Australia later as a subsequent entrant, in cases where the regulations are met.

<picture></picture>

For example:

The husband goes to Australia to study for a Master’s degree → the wife can apply for a Visa to go with him.

Or:

The wife goes to Australia to study → the husband can apply for a Visa to join them later.

This creates This is a choice worth considering for families who do not want husband and wife to live apart for many years.

Can the accompanying person work?

May have the right to work, but employment conditions depend on the specific Visa and Visa conditions.

Người đi cùng có thể làm việc không?

Có thể có quyền làm việc, nhưng điều kiện làm việc phụ thuộc vào Visa và điều kiện Visa cụ thể.

According to the Australian Department of Home Affairs, family members of Student Visa holders are generally limited to working 48 hours per fortnight while the course is in progress. There are exceptions, where the families of students studying a Master by Research or Doctoral Degree may enjoy broader work rights; Families of students studying Master by Coursework or Master Extended also have their own regulations. Visa holders need to check the actual conditions on VEVO.

Therefore, it should not be simply understood that “the accompanying spouse is allowed to work unlimitedly.” The right to work must be checked according to specific Visa conditions.

3. Families do not have to separate when one person goes to school

For married people, this can be a factor worth considering.

Instead of: One person in Australia studying

One person in Vietnam

The couple must maintain a remote life

, in case of eligibility, the family can choose: One person studying in Australia

Spouse accompanying

Living in Australia together during the visa period.

Especially for those studying a long program like a Bachelor or Master, being able to maintain family life together can make a significant difference in terms of personal experience.

<picture></picture>

4. The older child can become a “bridge” for the family to understand Australia better

A family member who has lived in Australia will have the opportunity to accumulate experiences that are difficult to obtain just by researching on the Internet.

For example:

How to rent a house

Actual cost of living

Transport

Education system

Work culture

Different cities

Weather and climate

Living environment

Management finance

Difficulties when living away from Vietnam

These experiences can become a very useful source of information for other members if they also want to go to Australia in the future. __________ Bank

Travel

Find a suitable job with Visa conditions

Manage expenses

Adapt to life in Australia

Thanks to that, people Going later can better visualize real life.

However, each person still has to meet their own visa conditions. Having a sibling studying in Australia does not mean that the relative is automatically granted a visa.

6. Families have more opportunities to reunite in Australia

6. Gia đình có thêm cơ hội đoàn tụ tại Úc

When the child or spouse is living in Australia, the family may have additional opportunities to meet here. _____ main.

7. You can accumulate living capital and international experience

This is probably the most important long-term value of studying abroad. After a few years living in Australia, a young person can accumulate:

Foreign language

Professional knowledge

Work experience

Ability to be independent

Financial management skills

Relationship network

Experience living in an international environment.**

These things not only serve the learner themselves but can also become a source of income. experience to share with family.

8. If you have the opportunity to stay and work after graduation, your family will have another member with international experience

After completing their studies, some students may be eligible for further Visa options, depending on their field of study, level, Visa conditions and policies at the time. For example, the Temporary Graduate Visa (subclass 485) has rules that allow family members to qualify assubsequent entrant.

However, it should be emphasized: Studying in Australia does not mean being sure to stay in Australia, have PR or citizenship. These are possibilities that depend on specific conditions and immigration policies at each time.

9. The biggest “benefit” is sometimes not money

When making a large investment for their children to study abroad, parents may often think: “The family spends money to send their children to school, so what does the family get in return?” The answer is not necessarily money.

A young person after many years of studying and living abroad can become:

More independent

More responsible

Able to use foreign languages better

Understand the international environment better

Have practical work experience

Know how to manage finances

Able to adapt to new environments

That is also a form ofvalue that the whole family can benefit from in the long run.

One person studies abroad – the whole family can open another door

Studying abroad in Australia is not an automatic path to bringing your whole family to Australia. But if you look long term, a member studying in Australia can create a new bridge between family and Australia. Parents may have the opportunity to visit their children.

Spouses in eligible cases may have the opportunity to accompany or come later.

You have another predecessor to share experiences with.

And those who study abroad have the opportunity to accumulate knowledge, foreign languages, experience and international living capital.

So, when a family decides to send their child to study abroad, the question should not only be: “What will my child learn?”

It can also be: “What additional opportunities can my child’s study abroad journey open up for the whole family?” Each family has different circumstances, learning goals and future plans. The choice of school, major and Visa strategy should be considered based on each member’s actual profile, instead of just looking at an individual benefit.

Let me ask, I want to enroll at the University of Sydney in February 2027, will I have time to take the IELTS test in mid-October? This is a question De1 receives quite a lot from those who are preparing their applications study Australia for February 2027.

Short answer: IT MAY BE TIMELY BUT SHOULD NOT BE TOO MUCH You plan to take the IELTS test in mid-October 2026, in terms of time there are still a few months before the February 2027 admission. However, IELTS is only part of the whole process. After getting the IELTS score, you still need to complete the application, meet the school’s admission conditions, receive or complete the Offer conditions, and prepare. CoE and records visa If you haven’t done it yet, the important thing is not just “Is it time to take the IELTS exam?”, but: How much IELTS score do you need and what step is your application currently at?

<picture></picture>

University Of Sydney How Much IELTS Is Required?

For programs under the University of Sydney Business School, English requirements may be higher than some other programs. For example, for a bachelor’s degree program under Business School, the IELTS Academic requirement could be: Overall 7.0 – no skill below 6.0. Therefore, if you have not currently reached the required IELTS level, taking the test in mid-October may still be a reasonable date to give you time to process if you need to retake the test.

Don’t Just Count the Time to Receive IELTS Score

A fairly common mistake is that you only count: IELTS Test → receive results → submit to school. In reality, the study in Australia application has many steps behind. A safer timeline could be:

September – early October 2026 → Prepare your study profile, determine your industry and check entry requirements.

Mid-October 2026 → IELTS test.

End of October 2026 → Receive results and complete missing conditions.

November–December 2026 → Complete Offer/admission conditions, CoE and prepare visa application according to actual application status.

Early 2027 → Preparing to go to Australia and enter the February 2027 semester. This is just a reference timeline. Actual processing times may vary depending on school, program, individual profile and Visa status.

So What If I Take the IELTS Test in Mid-October and Don’t Score Enough Score?

This is the problem that needs to be considered in advance. If your goal is University of Sydney and the program requires IELTS 7.0, taking the test only once in mid-October and then waiting for the results to start calculating the next step will narrow the timeline if you need to take the test again.

It’s best to prepare OTHER plans from the beginning.

For example:

Determine the exact IELTS score you need to achieve.

Received Offer Letter from a university at Australia is certainly a very welcome step. However, right after receiving the Offer, many of you wonder: “How many days do I have to Accept the Offer? If I don’t close right away will I lose my place?” The answer is: there is no general deadline that applies to all Australian schools. Acceptance deadline Offer depends onthe school, course, admission period and your Offer Letter itself.

<picture></picture>

1. What is an Offer Letter?

Offer Letter is a letter informing you that the school has agreed to accept you into the study program with specific conditions.

Offer can be:

Unconditional Offer: You have fully met the admission conditions.

Conditional Offer: You still need to complete one or more conditions before being granted Confirmation of Enrolment (CoE).

In the Offer Letter there is often very important information such as:

Course name

Course start date

Tuition

Conditions to be fulfilled

Acceptance Offer deadline

Amount to be paid

Payment instructions and admission confirmation

Therefore, don’t just look at the opening date to calculate Accept time Offer. Please check directly the deadline stated in the Offer letter.

2. How many days do you have to Accept Offer?

It is impossible to say that all Australian schools give students 7 days, 14 days or 30 days to Accept Offer. Each school may set different deadlines. For example, an Offer Letter might say: Offer Acceptance Deadline: September 30, 2026

In this case, you need to complete the steps required by the school before the above deadline. Some schools or programs may also require students topay a sum of money or tuition before the school confirms the Accept Offer.

So, the simplest principle:

Offer Letter → check Acceptance Deadline → complete conditions → Accept → pay according to instructions → receive CoE if eligible.

3. Will I definitely lose my place after the deadline?

You should not assume that exceeding the deadline means you will definitely lose your place, but you should also not be subjective. When the Offer expires, the field can:

Allows you to request an extension.

Reissue a new Offer.

Request to update information.

Change in conditions or tuition.

There is no more room in that intake and move on to the next intake.

This is especially notable for courses that have a limited number of places or are in high demand. If you cannot Accept on time, the safest way is to contact the school or counseling unit as soon as possible to ask about the possibility of an extension.

4. Does Accepting Offer mean paying full tuition?

Not necessarily. Depending on the school and program, after Accepting Offer you may be asked to:

Pay a deposit.

Partial payment of tuition fees.

Pay tuition according to school requirements.

Complete the missing conditions.

After the school confirms that you have met the requirements and paid according to regulations, the school will proceed with the next steps to issue Confirmation of Enrolment – CoE. CoE is a very important document for the Student Visa 500 application.

5. Should I accept the offer quickly?

You should not just accept because you are afraid of “losing your place” without carefully reading the Offer. Before confirming, you should check at least:

① Is it the right industry?

Do the course names, majors and campus match the original choice?

② Is the intake correct?

Check the course start date and duration.

③ How much is the tuition?

See tuition fees calculated by year, semester or credit and other fees, if any.

④ What are the conditions of the offer?

If it is a Conditional Offer, you need to know exactly what you have to add.

⑤ Deadline Accept Offer

This is information that should not be missed.

6. What if I’m waiting for another school?

This is a fairly common situation. You have received Offer from school A but are still waiting for results from school B. In this case, Offer A should not be automatically ignored. You can check the deadline of Offer A and contact the school to ask:

Can the Accept Offer period be extended? If the school grants an extension, you’ll have more time to consider your options. It is important to not let the Offer expire without contacting the school.

7. How are the Offer Letter and CoE different?

These are two concepts that many people easily confuse.

Offer Letter

CoE

Admission letter

Confirmation of enrollment

Issued after the school reviews the application

Usually issued after completing the school’s requirements

Can be Conditional or Unconditional

Used for course registration and Student Visa application

Accept deadline

Has course information and registration time

Can be understood simply: Offer → Accept → complete conditions/payment → CoE → prepare Student application Visa 500. However, specific procedures may vary from school to school.

8. Don’t let the Offer expire before processing it

If you have just received an Offer from an Australian school, check these 5 pieces of information immediately:

✓ Acceptance Deadline
✓ Conditions of Offer
✓ Deposit/Tuition to be paid
✓ Intake & course start date
✓ Conditions for the school to issue CoE

If you are not sure whether you should Accept or not, don’t guess the deadline or wait until close to the date. Please check the Offer Letter or contact the school directly. Receiving an Offer does not mean you have a fixed time period to Accept. The deadline depends on each school and each Offer Letter. In particular, if you are preparing to study abroad in Australia and apply for Student Visa 500, processing the Offer on time will help avoid unnecessary situations such as having to reapply for the Offer, transferring intake or losing the opportunity at the desired course.

However, international students from ASEAN countries, including Vietnam, are in the exception group to this restriction. This is especially important information for Vietnamese families who are planning to send their children to study abroad in Australia and want to bring their spouses or children with them.

According to information announced by Australian Home Affairs Minister Tony Burke on September 17, 2026, the new regulations will limit the ability to bring family along for most international students. However, exceptions continue to apply to citizens of ASEAN and Pacific countries, as well as certain groups of students pursuing special programs such as PhDs.

Vietnam belongs to the exception group regarding accompanying families

The most important point for Vietnamese people is that Vietnam belongs to ASEAN. According to the announced policy, international students in general will no longer be automatically able to bring family members to Australia on a Student Visa as before. However, students who are citizens of ASEAN countries are still in the exception group and are allowed to continue bringing family members along according to the applicable policy. This has direct implications for Vietnamese international students.

<picture></picture>

A Vietnamese student studying in Australia can build a plan to study abroad with his or her family, such as spouse and children, within the corresponding Visa conditions. The new regulations therefore do not apply to Vietnamese international students in the same way as they do to most other countries.

Why is this regulation especially important for Vietnamese families?

For many Vietnamese families, planning to study abroad in Australia is not only about the person directly studying. Families may want to bring their spouse and children to Australia at the same time to settle in and support the student. In a context where Australia is limiting the ability to bring family along for most international students, the fact that Vietnam is in the exception ASEAN group becomes a notable factor when building plans to study abroad. Instead of just considering the possibility of applying for a Student Visa for one person, families may need to calculate the overall study plan, accompanying relatives, finances, length of stay and subsequent Visa options after completing the program.

Which countries in the ASEAN group are exempt?

Exceptions for ASEAN include citizens of Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam. In addition to ASEAN, citizens of some countries in the Pacific region are also in the exception group mentioned by the Australian Government. Some special study programs, including PhD programs, also continue to have exception mechanisms.

This exception does not mean that Vietnam is exempt from all new Visa regulations

This is a point that Vietnamese international students need to understand accurately. The fact that Vietnam belongs to the exception group is only related to the regulation restricting accompanying family members. This does not mean that Vietnamese citizens are exempt from all other changes in the Australian Visa system. Vietnamese international students still must meet the applicable Student Visa conditions and other requirements of the Australian immigration system. Issues related to study purposes, Visa conditions, finances, learning process and Visa history still need to be considered in each application. Therefore, the correct understanding is:

Vietnamese international students are exempted from the restriction on accompanying families, not exempted from all of Australia’s new Visa regulations.

Australia also tightened the status of Visa hopping

In addition to regulations on accompanying families, the Australian Government also announced measures to control a situation called “Visa Hopping”. Under the newly announced policy, students who want to continue to stay in Australia on a Student Visa will have to show progress in their study path. One of the principles given is that moving to the next study program should be aimed at a higher level. For example, students completing a Bachelor’s program and continuing on to study a Master’s degree can be seen as a progression route in qualifications. On the contrary, continuously switching between courses or transferring to a lower level program to extend your time in Australia will be more strictly controlled.

For students who want to change courses, the new regulations may also require a new Visa in some cases. Therefore, building a learning path from the beginning becomes increasingly important.

What do Vietnamese students need to understand about the new policy?

The most important point is that Vietnamese nationality is in the ASEAN group that is exempted from the regulations restricting accompanying families. This makes a difference for families who are planning to bring relatives to Australia with international students. However, the ability for relatives to accompany you must still be done through the correct type of Visa and fully meet the applicable conditions at the time of application. Therefore, it should not be understood that just by having Vietnamese nationality, all family members will automatically be granted a Visa. The policy exception only specifies that the ASEAN group is not covered by the accompanying family restrictions announced for most international students.

How should Vietnamese families plan to study abroad?

For families planning to send their children to study in Australia in 2026 or 2027, planning should start from the entire route instead of focusing on just one Visa application. First of all, it is necessary to determine the appropriate study program for the student’s level and goals. Then it is necessary to determine the family members expected to accompany and the appropriate Visa type for each person. Families also need to prepare a financial plan corresponding to the number of people coming to Australia and the length of stay.

More importantly, students should determine their study path and post-graduation plans in advance. This is especially necessary in the context that Australia is strengthening control over the use of Student Visas to extend stays.

More than 45,000 Visas have been issued to family members of international students

According to data cited by ABC News from information about the new policy, in the last fiscal year Australia issued 337,427 Student Visas, of which 45,991 Visas were issued to dependents or family members of students. This number shows that the Visa group for family members of international students is a significant part of the system and is also one of the contents included in this policy adjustment by the Australian Government.

However, cases in ASEAN, the Pacific and some special study programs are still included in the announced exceptions.

The most important thing for Vietnamese students

In the context that Australia is tightening many temporary visa pathways, the exception for ASEAN is especially noteworthy information for Vietnamese international students.

If a Vietnamese family is planning to send their children to study in Australia and wants to bring their spouse and children with them, Vietnamese nationality belonging to the ASEAN group is an exception to the restriction on families accompanying them. However, other regulations still need to be followed. In particular, choosing a course, maintaining the learning process and building a suitable Visa roadmap will be increasingly important as Australia strengthens its control over Visa hopping.

Vietnamese international students are in the exception group to the regulations restricting accompanying families in Australia. This is an important point in the new Visa policy announced by the Australian Government on September 17, 2026. While most international students will be limited in their ability to bring family members to Australia during their studies, ASEAN citizens, including Vietnam, are still in the exception group that is allowed to apply the mechanism allowing families to accompany them.

However, this exception does not mean that Vietnamese people are exempt from all new Visa regulations. Student Visa requirements, family member eligibility, study history and regulations related to Visa hopping still need to be complied with. For Vietnamese families preparing to study in Australia, this is a change that needs to be included in the planning from the beginning to determine the correct study path, accompanying people and appropriate visa types.

A new tool that collects and analyzes social media data is being used to identify profiles that warrant closer inspection. According to The Canberra Times, the Ministry of Home Affairs’ new tool Australia can flag visa applicants identified by the system as high risk, thereby assisting application processing staff to conduct further assessments.

This is a notable change for those preparing documents Australian visa, because public information on the Internet can become one of the data sources to be considered. during the identity and risk assessment process. Note: Just because an application is flagged by the system does not mean that the person will definitely be denied a visa. This is a screening support tool, but the final decision must still be based on legal regulations and the application evaluation process.

How is Home Affairs using new tools?

According to information reported by The Canberra Times, Home Affairs has deployed a tool capable of collecting and analyzing data from social networks. Basically, the process can be understood as: Collect data → analyze information → detect notable signs → mark records → staff conduct further checks.

The important point is that this tool is not a system that automatically concludes that a person is “granted a Visa” or “denied a Visa”. Instead, it helps Home Affairs to identify cases that may need to be looked at more closely by staff, given that the Home Office processes a very large number of visa applications each year.

Why has social media become a problem for visa applicants?

For many years, the assessment of a visa applicant was not based on just one type of document. Home Affairs may consider many different factors related to:

Identity.

Immigration history.

Personality.

Security.

Past behavior.

Information declared by the visa applicant.

Other information related to the application review process.

In a context where technology is increasingly used in immigration management, public data on the Internet and social networks can become a source of information to support the screening process. This is especially notable after changes in Australian immigration law regarding character test – requirements on character.

Social media content that may be relevant to the Character Test

One of the notable features of the Australian law in 2026 is that the character provisions have been expanded to include some conduct related to hate and extremism. In certain circumstances set out in the Migration Act 1958, public statements, including online statements, may be considered when assessing matters relating to character. This means that a person should not assume that:

“What I post on Facebook or social media while outside Australia cannot be reviewed by Home Affairs.” However, it should not be understood that every social media post will be checked or that a normal post will cause visa application problems. Whether or not a piece of information is relevant depends on the content, circumstances and legal criteria applicable to each case.

Not having a criminal record does not mean ignoring the entire Character Test

A fairly common notion is: “If I have never committed a crime, I definitely meet the character requirements.” In fact, Australia’s Character Test is broader than testing money. The assessment may involve a variety of factors set out in the Migration Act 1958, including certain acts, connections and risks identified by law. Especially in 2026, provisions related to hate and extremism have become a notable part of the character legal framework.

So Home Affairs’s strengthening of social media screening technology needs to be seen in a broader context: Australia is strengthening its risk assessment and identification mechanisms in its visa program.

What content could become a problem?

Not all content on the Internet is meaningful for visa applications. Legally notable issues may include conduct or content that falls within categories defined by law, such as:

Related to a terrorist organization.

Some connections to organizations identified as hate organizations.

Support or participate in certain terrorism-related activities.

Certain acts constitute hate crimes.

Openly propagate certain ideas based on superiority or hatred based on race, skin color, nationality or ethnic origin.

Encourage others to perform certain acts within the scope of the law.

Notably, online statements may also fall within the scope of legal review in appropriate circumstances. Therefore, the issue is not whether a person uses Facebook, TikTok or Instagram, but whether the specific information and behavior is relevant to legal criteria.

Will Australia check Facebook, TikTok and Instagram of all visa applicants?

Information about the new tool shows that Home Affairs is increasing its ability to use social media data to assist in identifying records that need further examination. That’s different from saying: “Home Affairs will read the entire social networks of all visa applicants.” It should not be claimed that every visa applicant is manually checked on all social media platforms.

A more accurate way to put it is that Home Affairs is using technology to help sift through social media data and identify cases that may need closer examination.

Does being flagged by the system mean being denied a visa?

Are not. This is the point visa applicants need to understand most clearly. A screening system can identify a profile as “high risk” or in need of further review. That does not automatically mean that the application does not meet the visa conditions. It can be simply imagined: System detects signs → records are marked → inspector → evaluates according to regulations → makes a decision.

Therefore, being subjected to further inspection by the system and being denied a visa are two completely different issues.

What do Australian visa applicants need to prepare?

The most important thing is not to rush to delete your social network account. Instead, visa applicants should focus on the accuracy, honesty and consistency of their application.

1. Honest declaration

The information required in the visa application needs to be declared accurately. If there are issues related to immigration history, criminal records, conduct or other information that falls within the scope of questions from Home Affairs, visa applicants need to comply with the declaration requirements.

2. Do not provide false information

Intentionally concealing or providing inaccurate information can create more serious problems than the information itself that the visa applicant is trying to hide.

3. Understand that information published on the Internet can be reviewed

Visa applicants should realize that social networks are not completely separate from real life. A public content can become a source of information considered by authorities if it is related to an issue within the scope of review.

4. Don’t panic over common posts

A personal post, a common opinion, or normal social media activity does not mean that person will be marked as high risk. It is important to distinguish between normal social media activity and content that is genuinely related to legal criteria of character or security.

For Vietnamese people preparing to Student Visa 500, this information is interesting but should not be interpreted as everything Studying abroad students will be checked on social networks or assessed as risky. Student Visa applicants still need to meet the requirements applicable to their visa type, including character requirements where applicable. The most important thing is still: Honest records + consistent information + meeting visa requirements.

If Home Affairs needs additional information to assess the application, the visa applicant may be asked to provide additional documents or information.

A notable change in 2026

2026 saw notable changes in character testing regulations, including regulations related to hate and extremism. At the same time, Home Affairs is also increasing its use of data, technology and risk analysis methods in visa program management. These two developments make information screening in the digital environment an issue that visa applicants should better understand. However, it is necessary to distinguish: “Australia enhances screening capabilities” with “Australia checks social networks of all visa applicants.”

These two expressions do not have the same meaning.

Australian visa applicants need to remember 4 things

Things to remember

Meaning

Social networks can become a source of data

Public information on the Internet can be reviewed in appropriate cases

Tools can mark documents

“High risk” does not mean visa refusal

Character Test is more than just a criminal record

Australian law stipulates many other factors that can be considered

Honesty is still important

Do not try to hide or misrepresent information in your records

Home Affairs’ deployment of a new tool to support social media data screening shows that technology is being used more and more in the process of managing and assessing risk of Australian visa applications. For visa applicants, this does not mean that every Facebook, TikTok or Instagram account will be checked, nor does it mean that a person flagged by the system will automatically be denied a visa. What is more important is that visa applicants need to understand that online information can form part of the assessment process when it is related to legal criteria, especially in matters of character, security and risk.

Therefore, instead of worrying or deleting all social networks, visa applicants should focus on a profile that is honest, accurate and consistent with the information they provide to Home Affairs.
