Education Queensland International (EQI) – the unit responsible for managing programs for international students in Queensland public schools, Australia – has officially announced important updates to the entry requirements for the primary school program, effective from January 2026.

This change is part of the CRICOS provider re-registration process, aiming to improve the quality of student intake and ensure that international students are academically prepared to succeed in the Australian education system.
Key changes for students applying for Year 6 (from 2026)
From the 2026 academic year onwards, international students who wish to enroll in Year 6 of the primary school program at Queensland public schools must meet the following requirements:
- Start their studies in Term 1 of the school year.
- Show good academic performance over the past two school years, specifically:
- Pass grades in Mathematics and English.
- No more than two other subjects with failing results.
- In addition, students must meet one of the following English proficiency criteria:
- Successfully complete a Primary School Preparation Program approved by EQI
- Achieve a minimum score in a recognised international English language test (to be announced soon)
- Have completed at least 2 years of study in English at an international or English-medium school, with satisfactory academic results.
EQI may consider special admission for students applying in later terms
- Have completed at least 2 years of study in English with acceptable academic performance
- Have successfully completed a recognised Primary School Preparation Program approved by EQI.

What about students already studying in Queensland public schools?
Students currently studying in Year 5 at Queensland public schools in 2025 will be automatically considered eligible to enter Year 6 in 2026, provided they are making satisfactory academic progress. They will not be required to meet the new entry requirements again.
Additionally, parents may consider enrolling their children in Year 5 first, to help students adjust to the learning environment, improve their English skills, and complete the academic transition before moving into Year 6. This is a highly recommended pathway to ensure a smooth and continuous learning journey in Australia.
Education Queensland International (EQI) will soon release specific details about accepted English test scores and recognised preparation programs. Parents are encouraged to stay up to date with announcements to plan their child’s application accordingly.
