The Work and Holiday Visa (subclass 462) is a program introduced by the Australian Government for young citizens from eligible countries, including Vietnam. This visa allows participants to travel and work legally in Australia for up to 12 months.
The main purpose of Visa 462 is to promote cultural exchange while giving young people the opportunity to experience life and work abroad. At the same time, it helps Australia address short-term labor shortages in sectors such as hospitality, agriculture, and tourism.
In recent years, Australia has introduced a ballot (random selection) system for high-demand countries like Vietnam to ensure fair allocation of visa places.

1. What Information Is Required for the Visa 462 Ballot?
The ballot registration process is relatively simple. Applicants need to provide basic personal details, including full name, date of birth, gender, passport information, nationality, national ID number, email address, and an international payment method.
The ballot application fee is 25 AUD per person. Each individual can only apply once per program year, and the fee is non-refundable under any circumstances.
2. Important Notes When Registering
Applicants are not required to renew their passport if it still contains an old ID number, as long as the information provided is accurate and consistent with their current identification.
You can participate in the ballot even if you are currently in Australia. However, if selected, you must be outside Australia at the time of lodging your first visa application.
Reusing an existing account from previous years is allowed and recommended to maintain data consistency.
The intended travel date is not a critical factor and can be adjusted later. Your residential address should reflect your most current and valid documentation.
3. Eligibility and Required Documents After Being Selected
If selected through the ballot, applicants must prepare the following:
- A university or college degree, or at least two years of university study
- English proficiency: IELTS minimum 4.5 or PTE minimum 24
- Valid passport
- National ID card
- Passport-sized photos
- Certified translated birth certificate
- Residential information confirmation (CT07)
- Details of Relatives form
- Proof of funds: at least 5,000 AUD plus return airfare
- Health examination as required
Qualifications issued in Vietnam are accepted as long as they meet the requirements set by the Australian Department of Home Affairs.
4. Estimated Costs for Visa 462 Application
- Ballot fee: 25 AUD
- Visa application fee: 670 AUD
- English test (IELTS/PTE): under 5 million VND
- Health check: approximately 3–5 million VND
- Translation and notarization: a few hundred thousand VND
- Proof of funds: minimum 5,000 AUD
- Flight tickets: around 300–500 AUD
5. Should You Take an English Test in Advance?
It is highly recommended to prepare your English certificate early. Many applicants are selected in the ballot but fail to meet the requirement in time due to tight deadlines or insufficient preparation.
6. Does Winning the Ballot Guarantee Visa Approval?
Being selected in the ballot does not guarantee visa approval. It only gives you the opportunity to submit a visa application. The Department of Home Affairs will still assess your application based on education, English proficiency, financial capacity, health, and visa history.
After being selected, applicants have 28 days to complete and submit their application. Therefore, preparing documents in advance is crucial to improving your chances of success.
The Australia Work and Holiday Visa 462 offers a valuable opportunity for young people to experience life and work abroad. However, careful preparation and a clear understanding of the ballot process and requirements are essential to maximize your success rate.
