As July arrives marking the start of the Australian financial tax year, international students and temporary visa workers must lodge their annual Australian Individual Tax Return with the Australian Taxation Office (ATO).

Preparing your documentation early prevents errors, avoids unnecessary amended lodgments, and speeds up refund processing.
Essential Pre-Lodgment Document Checklist
- Tax File Number (TFN): Your unique 9-digit identifier issued by the ATO.
- Income Statements (Single Touch Payroll): Ensure all employers have marked your payroll income statements as “Tax Ready” in your linked myGov account before submitting.
- Valid Australian Bank Details: BSB and Account Number for direct refund deposit.
- Work-Related Deductions: Invoices and receipts for mandatory protective clothing, trade tools, professional courses directly connected to your current role, and business phone/internet usage.
- Medicare Levy Exemption Certificate: Temporary visa holders (e.g. Student Visa 500, Graduate 485) not entitled to Medicare should claim the Medicare Levy Exemption.
